A dental crown, it covers the entire tooth. Some people call them caps. That’s one of the more common words used to describe a crown. But it’s used to treat a tooth that’s had a fracture in it where we wanna encase and cover the entire tooth so the fracture is stabilized. And we’re not functioning on the tooth itself, but on the crown material as you bite together so the fracture doesn’t run like a rock chip in a windshield.
We also use crowns when, especially for back teeth, after they’ve had root canal treatments. Sometimes we put crowns on teeth if it’s been restored multiple times in the restorations, the fillings in the material, are big and mechanically the tooth is breaking down, separating from the filling material. Sometimes there’s just really large cavities and the best restorative option is a crown.
And bridge comes in different lengths, different numbers of teeth, but it’s, by definition, multiple teeth. And it is just like a crown except they’re all linked together, cemented in place so it doesn’t come in and out. It is a fixed restoration and it can be a very useful and a great alternative to missing teeth in certain cases.
Restore Your Smile & Bring Back Your Bite
Dental crowns have been an integral part of restorative dental care for literally thousands of years. Since they cover your entire tooth, there are few dental problems a dental crown can’t fix. Modern crowns are made with materials that are durable and look natural. This makes them an excellent solution for problems like broken teeth, cracked teeth, and large cavities. In addition, they can conceal discolored teeth, misshapen teeth, and dental wear and tear.
Crowns will:
- Blend in beautifully with your other teeth
- Restore your ability to bite and chew without pain or problems
- Fill gaps in your smile when they are fused together to create a dental bridge
Depending on the number of teeth you need to replace, you can place a crown or bridge on dental implants to replace what’s missing from your smile.
